Alzheimer’s Sensory Blanket

Alzheimer's Sensory Fidget Blanket - Idea For Those With Dementia, Autism & Restless Fingers

My husband’s grandmother (Grammy) is starting to go through the stages where she forgets and needs to always do something with her hands. Also with the help of my husbands cousin and Grammy she finished a beautiful king quilt, all hand sewn and I wanted to give something back to them both.

At first I thought a handmade journal would be a great gift but then remembered that Grammy probably wouldn’t get much use out of it. So a sensory blanket was the next option. It’s something that could help her, keep her hands busy, and bring back memories with different pictures of family.

I looked up some ideas on Pinterest however I didn’t find anything that seemed bright, exciting…new! I seen a lot of dark blankets, dark fabric choices..and that just didn’t seem happy to me. So with a few ideas in mind after looking at a couple Pinterest ideas I set off to Hobby Lobby.

Here is a list of a few items that you would like for your sensory blanket –

  • Buttons to hang or fasten
  • String
  • Zipper
  • Pockets (I used burlap pouches)
  • Fabric for back and front
  • Batting
  • Ribbon trim
  • Scrap (or new) fabric for additional things (I did a heart)
  • Stuffed heart
  • Small bear
  • Noise Item – I used mini cow bells
  • Beads on a string
  • Velcro
  • Buckle Clasp
  • Plastic see through fabric to insert pictures
  • Pictures
  • Mini slinky
  • Fabric swatches..different textures, plush, rough, etc

There are MANY other ideas, but this is just to name a few to get you started. I honestly purchased what I thought would be great for Grammy and keep her busy…while also keeping in mind bright colors and textures. I had no clue how I would arrange them but it turned out perfectly once I got started. This blanket measured about 22 x 18.

Try not to use anything that they can choke on, if you do make sure it is secure.

I used some scrap fabric and made a cute velcro flap where I have a little picture located inside of us.

I loved these burlap bags. You can also cut out jean pants pockets. I added some cow bells to a string…not attached. I didn’t want to stitch anything in the bags because I wanted the option to always put different things in the pouches and that way Grammy can be surprised each time. You can put photos, small noise makers, a mini bear..anything they love and even sentiments.

I also added so fringe type textures that has lace, a golden braided cord, and other fringes that came in a container from Hobby Lobby. I loved how it turned out!

Look on Pinterest for other ideas on how to arrange your sensory blanket and other goodies that would be great for restless fingers. Don’t forget to share!
