There are TONS of ways to start blogging and it can be extremely overwhelming as it was for me when starting to blog. So allow me to help you with not getting overwhelmed but instead have everything you need to know about blogging and being able to make an income out of it…..all in one place. Exciting right?! So lets get started!

1

How Much Time Do You Have?

  • Whether a stay at home mom with 1 child or 5, you have to carve out some time out of your day to work on the website.
  • Ask yourself how much time you can dedicate to blogging each day

Organization:

  • If you think you can do 5 hours one day, 2 hours the next, and 0 hours on another, you NEED to create a list of to-do’s
  • Get a jumbo calendar
  • Buy a planner

2

What Do You Love?

  • What is it that all your friends come to you for advice on? Write about it!
  • You have so many beauty products but certain ones are great and you found out others or not so great…blog about it!
  • There is always someone searching for what you are blogging about whether beauty, pregnancy, baby shower ideas…the topic are endless
  • Find what your extremely passionate about and write about it

Food Blog, Baby Blog or Beauty Blog…maybe all 3?

  • Do people get blown away every time they taste your food….Food Blog it is! Nanny or Babysitter? Lots of Kids? Give advice on your baby blog.
  • If you love more then 2-3 things and can’t decide on what to base your blog on, try to do one main focus and follow the rest behind. My main focus is baby/pregnancy but I also have a few things to suggest for natural hair ladies, and I’m starting to get into makeup talk so now I want to share that with others. Hence the name SewManyWaysKimi…Lets talk about that next!

Blog Name Ideas:

  • Whats your main theme of your blog?
  • Create a unique name, something catchy
  • Try a name that rhymes or something that at least flows well off the tongue.
  • Imagine talking to a friend and saying hey go to my website its Suzyblues.com or would you like to say Suzyisdownwiththesadblues.com.
  • You want people to remember your website name, make it easier with a short and simple name.
  • Try staying at around 4-5 syllables

Blog Name Ideas:

  • Food Blog – FoodWithEmily.com
  • Baby Blog –  LittleFeetKeepsMeBusy.com
  •  Fashion Blog – ElizabethLovesClothes.com (I’m honestly making these up as I type)
  • Interior/ Exterior Design – InsideOutWithSue.com

DIY, Antiques, or Interior Design?

  • I could not choose a name because I had so many things I love to do….so eventually I came up with Sew (love to sew!) Many Ways Kimi because honestly their are “Sew” many things I want to talk about and sometimes they are not on the same topic as my main topic which is baby.
  • It’s okay to have many interest, just make tabs on your header bar for easy navigation. Your header bar will probably have: Hair and Beauty, Wardrobe, Baby, DIY…list can go on and on.

Free Blog or Pay?

With as much hassle as I’ve been through…and heard the same from other bloggers, I would highly recommend starting out with a paid blog using the best host…..Bluehost.

Disclosure: I am a Bluehost Affiliate. Affiliate means I have agreed to be partners with the company and receive a small commission fee when you purchase from them. I do this to continue offering great blogs, create an income, and share my favorite recommendations.

No Way…But Free is the Best….Right?

Not always. Here are some problems you will run into with having a free site:

  • You cannot make money on your site from advertisement because you are not the host
  • You cannot edit your blog entirely and make it extremely customizable because you’re not the host
  • You’ll have that annoying url… CookwithAmanda.wordpress.com…such a downer for people searching for your website
  • If you were to get tons of pins from your CookwithAmanda.wordpress.com and switch to a new domain name with just CookwithAmanda, now people are going to 2 different sites, the other one isn’t getting updates because your focused on your new one, the blog you posted doesn’t show up anymore on the old site…the list goes on and on.
  • It’s also could be a bit of a hassle to switch all information from your CookwithAmanda.wordpress.com to your new site

You will need to self host your blog to keep it professional, appealing and monetize (create a profit).

With all that said, let’s start with creating are awesome blog! First step will be to go over to your hosting site to get your domain name and hosting. Nothing but the best from Bluehost!

  • I highly recommend doing the Domain Privacy Protection, all the others is not as relevant if your on a budget. You can always get the rest later.
  • Screen Shot 2015-11-14 at 10.01.45 AMClick the “Instal WordPress” Button

  • Install WordPress, or set it up on an existing domain

This is important, I struggled with this at first. I kept on logging on to my old website but did not see any change. Your new domain where you will go to log in will be:

domainname.com/wp-admin
